The movement was started in India in 1973, shortly after independence, to support Hindu refugees from Bangladesh who had been brutally tortured by the Pakistani army in Bangladesh in 1971. This movement became publicly active when Bangabhumi declared the independence of the Hindu Republic on 4 February 2004. But the movement came to a standstill as it did not get any support from the secular government of India at that time.

The movement claims that about 1.5 crore Hindus who had to flee their homes due to communal riots have the right to settle in their homeland. Greater Khulna, Kushtia, Jessore, Faridpur, Barisal and Patuakhali were planned to form Bangabhumi. The proposed state policy adopted secularism and humanism. The proposed name of the radio station was 'Bangabani' in keeping with India's 'Akashvani' and the national slogan was 'Joy Hind' in keeping with India's 'Joy Hind'. An armed branch called Bangasena has also been formed.
