ভারতীয় আর্য ঋষিগণের নিকট বেদ সর্বাপেক্ষা প্রামাণিক গ্রন্থ। বেদ থেকে সকল শাস্ত্রের সৃষ্টি। ঈশ্বরে বিশ্বাস থাকা,বা না থাকা- বিশেষ হানিকর কিছু নয়; কিন্তু বেদ বা পরমজ্ঞান অবিশ্বাস করা আত্মঘাতী। তপস্যারত ব্রহ্মনিষ্ঠ ঋষিগণ ব্রহ্মার দয়ায় বেদমন্ত্র দর্শন করেছিলেন। যিনি যে মন্ত্র দর্শন করতেন, তিনি সেই মন্ত্রের দ্রষ্টা বা ঋষি। ঋষিরা কিন্তু বেদ মন্ত্রের কর্তা নন। কারণ বেদ অপৌরুষেয়, অর্থাৎ কোনো মানুষের রচিত নয়। যার সৃষ্টি আছে, তার বিনাশ আছে। বেদ এই সৃষ্টি-বিনাশের চক্র থেকে মুক্ত।

ধ্যানস্থ থাকার সময় বৈদিক ঋষিগণের নিকট মন্ত্র যখন প্রকাশিত হচ্ছিল, তখন তাঁরা যে স্পন্দন অনুভব করেছিলেন, তা-ই ছন্দ। বেদে ছন্দের সংখ্যা মোট ৭টি। গায়ত্রী, উষ্ণিক, অনুষ্ঠুপ, বৃহতী, পঙক্তি, ত্রিষ্টুপ এবং জগতী। বেদ কেবল ধর্মগ্রন্থ-ই নয়, জীবনচক্রের এক অনন্য দলিলও বটে। বেদ সমস্ত জাগতিক জ্ঞানের ভিত্তি। কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্যবশত হিন্দু জাতি, বেদ তথা জ্ঞান-বিচ্যুত হয়ে, অন্ধভক্তি-অন্ধবিশ্বাস-কুসংস্কার- কল্পকাহিনীকে ধর্ম ভ্রম করে অধঃপতিত হয়েছে, ক্ষয়প্রাপ্ত হয়েছে। বেদ-এ বর্ণভেদ নেই,নারীবিদ্বেষ নেই,বিষয় বৈরাগ্যবাদ নেই। অথচ হিন্দুরা এই সমস্ত আবর্জনা আঁকড়ে ধরে, নিজেদের ধ্বংসের রাস্তা সুগম করেছে।
