কা’ব বিন আশরাফ ছিলেন একজন ইহুদী কবি। তিনি মুহাম্মদের ধর্মীয় নীতির কঠর সমালোচক ছিলেন এবং সেগুলি তিনি কবিতা লিখে জনসম্মুখে পাঠ করতেন। তিনি মক্কার কুরাইশদের সমর্থকও ছিলেন। প্রফেট মুহাম্মদের কার্যকলাপ নিয়ে তিনি কবিতা লেখায় তাকে হত্যা করার জন্য স্বয়ং মুহাম্মদ তার সাহাবীদের মিথ্যার আশ্রয় নেয়ার অনুমতি দিয়েছিলেন। সাহাবী মুহাম্মদ বিন মাসলামাহ সেটাই করেছিলেন। সে কা’ব বিন আশরাফের কাছে গিয়ে তার বিশ্বস্ত হওয়ার জন্য মুহাম্মদের নামে নিন্দা করতে শুরু করে। সে বলে মুহাম্মদ আমাদেরকে মহাকষ্টে ফেলে দিয়েছে। সে শুধু আমাদের কাছে ‘সাদকা’ চায়। মানে বিনামূল্যে দান চায়। একথা বলে মাসলামাহ কা’ব বিন আশরাফের কাছে ঋণ চেয়ে আবেদন করে। নিজেদের অস্ত্রশস্ত্র বন্দক রেখে ঋণ গ্রহণে সম্মত হওয়ার পর মাসলামাহ রাতে দেখা করার কথা বলে বিদায় নেয়। রাতেরবেলা মুহাম্মাদ বিন মাসলামাহ রাঃ কা’ব বিন আশরাফের দুধভাই আবু নায়লাকে সাথে নিয়ে আসলেন। তারা দু’জন তাকে ডাক দিলে সে যখন নেমে আসতে যাচ্ছিলো তখন তার স্ত্রী তাকে বললো, ‘এতো রাতে কোথায় যাচ্ছো? আমার কাছে মনে হচ্ছে যেন তার কথা থেকে রক্তের ফোঁটা ঝড়ে পড়ছে’। অন্য বর্ণনায় এভাবে এসেছে, ‘আমার কাছে মনে হচ্ছে যেন তার মুখের আওয়াজের সাথে রক্ত বেরিয়ে আসছে’। সে বললো, আরে! এতো আমার বন্ধু মুহাম্মাদ বিন মাসলামাহ ও আমার দুধভাই আবু নায়লা এসেছে, ওদের সাথে একটু কথা বলতে যাচ্ছি।
