Barisal District Awami League Organizing Secretary Shahab Ahmed commented that Sanatan religious people living in Bangladesh are 'inferior kits'. He gave this speech at a protest rally organized by the local Awami League at Balur Math in Mehendiganj town of the district last Saturday afternoon. Mehendiganj Upazila Awami League General Secretary and Municipal Mayor Kamal Uddin Khan was organized by local Awami League to protest the threat of killing by local MP Pankaj Nath. Speaking at the rally, Shahab Ahmed, son of the late former president of district Awami League and former member of parliament Mohiuddin Ahmed and organizing secretary of district Awami League, said that the job of a member of parliament is to make laws. বাংলাদেশে বসবাসকারী সনাতন ধর্মাবলম্বীরা 'নিকৃষ্ট কিট' বলে মন্তব্য করেছেন বরিশাল জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক শাহাব আহমেদ। গত শনিবার বিকেলে জেলার মেহেন্দিগঞ্জ শহরের বালুর মঠে স্থানীয় আওয়ামী লীগ আয়োজিত এক প্রতিবাদ সমাবেশে তিনি এ বক্তব্য দেন। তার বক্তব্য ইতিমধ্যেই ভাইরাল হয়েছে সোশ্যাল মিডিয়ায়। এতে ক্ষোভ প্রকাশ করেছেন সনাতন ধর্মাবলম্বীরা।
মেহেন্দিগঞ্জ উপজেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক ও পৌর মেয়র কামাল উদ্দিন খানকে স্থানীয় সংসদ সদস্য পঙ্কজ নাথের হত্যার হুমকির প্রতিবাদে স্থানীয় আওয়ামী লীগের উদ্যোগে এ আয়োজন করা হয়। সমাবেশে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের প্রয়াত সাবেক সভাপতি ও সাবেক সংসদ সদস্য মহিউদ্দিন আহমেদের ছেলে ও জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক শাহাব আহমেদ বলেন, সংসদ সদস্যের কাজ আইন প্রণয়ন করা। একজন সংসদ সদস্য যখন অন্য প্রতিনিধিকে মারধরের কথা বলেন, তখন তার সংসদ সদস্য হওয়ার কোনো অধিকার নেই।
তিনি আরও বলেন, স্বাধীনতার আগে বাংলাদেশে অনেক হিন্দু ছিল।
এক সময় পাকিস্তান হওয়ায় সনাতন ধর্মের অনুসারী উচ্চবর্ণের অনেকেই ভারতের পশ্চিমবঙ্গে চলে আসেন। আর নিকৃষ্ট কিট (হিন্দু) এখানেই থেকে গেল।

বরিশাল জেলা হিন্দু-বৌদ্ধ-খ্রিস্টান ঐক্য পরিষদের সভাপতি অ্যাডভোকেট মানবেন্দ্র বটব্যাল বলেন, জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক পদে অধিষ্ঠিত একজন নেতার এমন বক্তব্য অপ্রত্যাশিত এবং মুক্তিযুদ্ধের আদর্শ ও চেতনার পরিপন্থী। এই বক্তব্য বাংলাদেশের সাম্প্রদায়িক শক্তিকে উস্কে দেওয়ার সামিল। তিনি শাহাব আহমেদের বক্তব্যের এই অংশের তীব্র নিন্দা করেন এবং তা প্রত্যাহারের দাবি জানান। উস্কানিমূলক বক্তব্য দেওয়ায় শাহাব আহমেদের বিরুদ্ধে আওয়ামী লীগের সাংগঠনিক ব্যবস্থা নেওয়ার দাবি জানান তিনি।
