Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India. Chief Justice NV Ramana administered the oath to him in Parliament at 10.30 am local time on Monday (July 25).
After taking the oath, the head of state was given a song salute. In his speech at the inauguration ceremony, he said, "I feel fortunate to have been elected as the president of a progressive country." He said that he is the first person born after independence to be elected to this position. Therefore, he expressed his determination to fulfill the expectations of the freedom fighters.
Outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Sonia Gandhi and others were present at the time.
64-year-old Draupadi Murmu is India's first president from an ethnic minority. And second as Indian woman head of state. His political journey began in 1997. He has handled various responsibilities of the party-legislature starting from Trinamool. Despite a career spanning two and a half decades, Draupadi Murmu came into the limelight after being elected as the Governor of Jharkhand state in 2015.
