Fire at Hindu fishing village in Rangpur, 51 convicts in jail
The court has rejected the bail application of 51 accused in the case of attack, arson and looting in Jelapalli of Pirganj upazila of Rangpur, spreading rumors of so-called religious insults on Facebook.
On Sunday (August 7), when 51 accused, including the main accused Shahiduzzaman Mandal alias Shahid, surrendered to the court and applied for bail, Judge SM Shafiqul Islam of Rangpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-1 rejected the application and ordered them to be sent to jail.
On October 17, 2021, a group of fanatical extremist Muslims led by Shahiduzzaman Mandal attacked and torched at least 25 houses and shops in Majhipara, Battala and Hatibandha villages of Ramnathpur Union in Pirganj. A day after the incident, on October 18, Pirganj police station SI Ismail Hossain filed a case naming 146 people as the plaintiff. The investigating officer of the case, SI Mahbub Hossain, filed a charge sheet against all the accused in the court. Hundreds of accused including Shahid, the main accused in the case, were absconding for a long time. On Sunday afternoon, they surrendered to the court and applied for bail.
