রানী দ্বিতীয় এলিজাবেথ মারা যাবার পর তাকে ও তার দেশকে ভারতর্ষকে গোলাম করে রাখার জন্য অনেকে যেমন গালি দিচ্ছে, আবার অনেকেই ভিন্নমত প্রসনও করছে। বিষয়টা আসলে এত সহজ নয়। এই একটি বিষয়ে পরিস্কার করে কোন একটি পক্ষ নেয়া সম্ভব নয়। ব্রিটিশ উপনিবেশ স্রেফ ব্রিটিশদের কাছে অর্থ কামানোর একটা ব্যবসা ছাড়া কিছু ছিলো না। কিন্তু ব্রিটিশ শাসন ভারতীয়দের জন্য শাপেবর হয়ে এসেছিলো। এটি রাজা রাহমোহন, বিদ্যাসাগর উভয়েই বুঝেছিলেন। স্যার সৈয়দ আহমদও বুঝেছিলেন। তারা বুঝেছেন ব্রিটিশদের আরো একশো বছর এদেশে থাকতে হবে ভারতীয়দের প্রস্তুত হতে।
আমার নিজের ধারণা ভারতবর্ষের ব্রিটিশদের অন্তত বিংশ শতাব্দীর ষাট-সত্তর দশক পর্যন্ত থাকা উচিত ছিলো। তাহলে মনে হয় দেশভাগের মত বিপর্যয় এড়ানো যেতো। ব্রিটিশ শাসনের ফলে মুসলিম সাম্রাজ্যবাদের মধ্যযুগীয় শাসনের পালা আরো দীর্ঘ হতে পারেনি।
ফলে ভারতীয়রা আধুনিক জ্ঞান বিজ্ঞান দর্শনের সঙ্গে পরিচিত হতে পেরেছে। ভারতে একটি সুশৃঙ্খল প্রশাসন দাঁড় হতে পেরেছে। সর্বপরি ভারতীয় জাতিগুলি মুসলিম সাম্রাজ্যবাদ থেকে মুক্ত হয়ে ব্রিটিশ উপনিবেশ আমলে নিজেদের আত্মপরিচয়, স্বদেশীয়তাকে অনুভব করতে পেরেছে। প্রীতিলতা বা সূর্যসেন নবাবী আমলে কি নিজেদের স্বাধীন মনে করতে পারত? পারত না। দেশের সুলতান হবেন সব সময় মুসলমানরা। তারাই শাসক শ্রেণী।
ব্রিটিশরা যদি এদেশে না আসত তাহলে ভারতের শাসন ব্যবস্থার কি হতো? মুসলমানরা কোনদিন মনে করত যে এই দেশের শাসন বা মালিক হওয়া হিন্দুদেরও প্রাপ্য? মনে যদি করত তাহলে তিতুমীর হাজি শরীতুল্লাহ ‘দারুল ইসলাম’ কায়েমের জন্য বাঁশের কেল্লা বানাতো না।
ভারতের স্বাধীনতার লড়াই শেষে গিয়ে ঠেকল দেশভাগ গিয়ে। মুসলমানদের আলাদা দেশ লাগবে। মুসলিমরা দাবী করে তারা সাতশো বছর ভারত শাসন করেছে (যা সম্পূর্ন মিথ্যা)। যদি সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ হিন্দুদের তারা সাতশো বছর সাম্রাজ্যবাদে প্রজা করে রাখতে পারে তাহলে ব্রিটিশদের দুইশো বছর শাসনের বিদায়কালে কেন লাহোর প্রস্তাব দিয়ে মুসলমানদের জন্য আলাদা দেশের দাবী উঠানো হলো?
অখন্ড ভারতে হিন্দুরা সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ হলে মুসলমানরা হিন্দুদের সঙ্গে প্রতিযোগিতায় পেরে উঠবে না- এই ছিলো যুক্তি। অথচ তারাই ভারতে মুসলিম সাম্রাজ্যবাদে হিন্দুদের প্রজা করে রেখেছিলো। তীতুমীর ও হাজি শরীতুল্লাহর সালাফি ইসলামের আন্দোলন যা শেষে ‘দারুল ইসলাম’ নামে ইসলামিক দেশ কায়েমের জন্য বাঁশ দিয়ে কেল্লা বানিয়ে জিহাদ করেছিলো- তা থেকে বুঝা যায় মুসলিম শাসনে ভারতের অমুসলিমরা স্রেফ প্রজা ছিলো মুসলমানদের। নইলে তিতুমীর শরীয়তুল্লাহ কেন ব্রিটিশদের কাছ থেকে তাদের হারানো ক্ষমতা আবার কেড়ে নেবার কথা বলবে? তিতুমীরের স্বাধীনতা হচ্ছে আবার ভারতে মুসলিম শাসন হবে। ভারতকে দারুল ইসলাম বানাতে হবে।
ব্রিটিশ শাসন ছিলো বলেই হিন্দু ধর্মের সংস্কার সম্ভব হয়েছিলো।
এতে ব্রিটিশদের কোন অবদান নেই। কিন্তু শাসন ব্রিটিশদের হাতে ছিলো বলেই রামমোহন বিদ্যাসাগর আইন পাশ করতে পেরেছিলেন। হিন্দু নারীদের শিক্ষা আরো সাতশো বছর পিছিয়ে যেতো যদি ব্রিটিশ শাসন ভারতে না আসত। যদি ব্রিটিশ শাসন না থাকত তাহলে রোকেয়া মুসলিম নারীদের শিক্ষার জন্য স্কুল খুলতে পারত না নবাব সুলতানদের আমলে। মুসলমান নারী সমাজ আরো সাতশো বছর পিছিয়ে যেতো। দয়া করে ভাববেন না, এসবের পিছনে ব্রিটিশদের অবদানের কথা বলছি। আমি বলছি ব্রিটিশ শাসনটি ভারতীয়দের কাছে শাপেবর ছিলো। আর যদি বেসরকারী ব্রিটিশদের কথা বলেন, তাহলে এমন সব মহান সব ব্রিটিশ এদেশে এসেছিলেন শিক্ষা বিস্তারে, সমাজ সংস্কারে, জ্ঞান ছড়িয়ে দিতে এমনকি প্রথম ছাপাখানাটি স্থাপন সম্ভব হয়েছিলো উইলিয়াম কেরি নামের এক পাদ্রি ব্রিটিশের কারণে।
সারা পৃথিবীতে ব্রিটিশ কলোনি ছিলো। ব্রিটিশদের তাই কমবেশি সব জাতিই পরাধীন করে রাখার জন্য দায়ী করে থাকে। ব্রিটিশরা যদি তাদের উপনিবেশ দেশকে নিজেদের দেশ বানিয়ে নিতো তাহলে কি হতো মাঝে মাঝে ভাবি। ইয়েমেনের এক দরবেশ শাহজালাল যিনি স্থানীয়দের উপর জিহাদ চালিয়ে এখানেই মরে গিয়েছিলেন। সুলতান মাহমুদ যদি ভারতবর্ষের কোথাও মরে যেতে তাহলে তার মাজারে মুসলমানদের মত হিন্দুরাও গিয়ে গিলাফ চড়াতো। সুলতান মাহমুদ আল্লার অলি হিসেবে মান্য হতো। লুটপাট কেবল ব্রিটিশরাই করেনি, ময়ূর সিংহাসন বা কোহিনূরই কেবল পাচার হয়নি, সুলতান মাহমুদ, চেঙ্গিস খান, তৈমুর লংক, বাবুর ভারতের সোনাদানা বস্তায় ভরে ভরে হাজার হাজার উটের পিঠে চড়িয়ে নিজেদের দেশে পাচার করেছিলো। ব্রিটিশরা যদি আমেরিকা অস্ট্রেলিয়া সাউথ আফ্রিকার মত ভারতকেও নিজেদের দেশ বানিয়ে ফেলত তাহলে কী যে হতো জানি না।
রানী দ্বিতীয় এলিজাবেথের মৃত্যুতে কত কথা মনে এলো। কিন্তু তার মৃত্যুতে না শোক না আনন্দ কোন অনুভূতিই হয়নি।

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, many are criticizing her and her country for enslaving India, while many others are dissenting. The matter is actually not so simple. It is not possible to take a clear side on this issue. British Colony was nothing but a money making business for the British. But the British rule came as a shambles for the Indians. Both King Rahmohan and Vidyasagar understood this. Sir Syed Ahmed also understood. They understood that the British would have to stay in this country for another hundred years for the Indians to prepare. My own opinion is that the British should have stayed in India at least until the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century. Then it seems that disaster like partition could have been avoided. British rule could not prolong the turn of medieval rule by Muslim imperialism.
As a result, Indians have come to know the philosophy of modern knowledge. A disciplined administration has been established in India. Above all, the Indian nations have been freed from Muslim imperialism and have been able to feel their identity, patriotism during the British colonial period. Could Pritilata or Suryasen have considered themselves independent during the Nawabi era? could not Muslims will always be the Sultan of the country. They are the ruling class. If the British did not come to this country, what would happen to the governance of India? Did Muslims ever think that Hindus deserve to rule or own this country? Haji Sharitullah of Titumir would not have built a bamboo fort for the establishment of 'Darul Islam' if he had thought. After India's independence struggle, partition was prevented. Muslims need a separate country. Muslims claim that they ruled India for seven hundred years (which is completely false). If they could keep the majority of Hindus under imperialism for seven hundred years, then why did the Lahore proposal raise the demand for a separate country for the Muslims during the departure of the two hundred years of British rule?
If Hindus were the majority in a united India, Muslims would not be able to compete with Hindus - this was the argument. But they kept the Hindus as subjects in the Muslim imperialism in India. Titumi's and Haji Sharitullah's movement of Salafi Islam, which led to the establishment of an Islamic country called 'Darul Islam' by building a bamboo fort for jihad, shows that the non-Muslims of India were only subjects of the Muslims under Muslim rule. Otherwise, why would Titumi's Shariatullah talk about taking back their lost power from the British? Titumir's independence means Muslim rule in India again. India should be made Darul Islam. The reformation of Hinduism was possible because of the British rule. British have no contribution in it. But because the rule was in the hands of the British, Rammohan Vidyasagar was able to pass the Act. Hindu women's education would have gone back another seven hundred years if British rule had not come to India. Had it not been for British rule, Rokeya would not have been able to open schools for the education of Muslim women during the reign of the Nawab Sultans. Muslim women's society would go back another seven hundred years. Please don't think that I am talking about British contribution behind all this. I say the British rule was a shambles for the Indians. And if we talk about private British, then all such great British came to this country to spread education, social reform, spread knowledge and even setting up the first printing press was possible because of a clergyman named William Carey. British colonies were all over the world. The British are therefore held responsible for subjugating more or less all nations. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if the British had made their colonies their own country. Shahjalal, a Yemeni dervish who died here waging jihad against the natives. If Sultan Mahmud had died somewhere in India, then Hindus like Muslims would have gone to his shrine and worshiped him. Sultan Mahmud was regarded as Allah's god. The looting was not done by the British, the Peacock throne or the Kohinoor was not only smuggled, Sultan Mahmud, Genghis Khan, Timur Long, Babur loaded sacks of gold from India and smuggled it back to their own country on thousands of camels. I don't know what would have happened if the British had made India their own country like America, Australia and South Africa. How many words came to mind on the death of Queen Elizabeth II. But there was neither grief nor joy at his death.
