কনজারভেটিভ পার্টির ১৯২২ কমিটির চেয়ারপারসন স্যার গ্রাহাম ব্রাডি ঘোষণা করেন, দলের নতুন নেতা নির্বাচনে শুধু সুনাকের মনোনয়নপত্র পেয়েছেন তাঁরা। সে কারণে তাঁকে নতুন দলীয় প্রধান ঘোষণা করা হলো।
যুক্তরাজ্যে ক্ষমতাসীন দলের নেতাই প্রধানমন্ত্রী হন। গত বৃহস্পতিবার লিজ ট্রাস প্রধানমন্ত্রী ও দলীয় প্রধানের পদ থেকে পদত্যাগ করার পর কনজারভেটিভ পার্টির নতুন নেতা নির্বাচনের প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হয়।
সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী বরিস জনসন ও হাউস অব কমন্সের স্পিকার পেনি মরডান্ট এই নির্বাচনে ঋষি সুনাকের প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী ছিলেন। তাঁরা দুজনই আজ প্রধানমন্ত্রী নির্বাচনের প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা থেকে সরে দাঁড়ান।

দলীয় নেতা নির্বাচনের চূড়ান্ত ধাপে এসে লিজ ট্রাসের কাছে হেরে যান ঋষি সুনাক। তবে লিজ ট্রাস প্রধানমন্ত্রী হয়ে যেসব অর্থনৈতিক নীতি নেন, তাতে যুক্তরাজ্যের মুদ্রাবাজারে অস্থিরতা দেখা দেয়। পরিস্থিতি সামলে নিতে না পেরে তিনিও বিদায় নেন।
তাঁর বিদায়ে রাশিয়া–ইউক্রেন যুদ্ধের কারণে অর্থনীতি ও রাজনৈতিক অঙ্গনে সৃষ্ট অস্থিরতার মধ্যে যুক্তরাজ্যের হাল ধরার দায়িত্ব পড়ল ঋষি সুনাকের কাঁধে।
ঋষি সুনাক ২০১৫ সালে রিচমন্ডের নর্থ ইয়র্কশায়ার থেকে প্রথমবার ব্রিটিশ পার্লামেন্ট সদস্য নির্বাচিত হন। পাঁচ বছরের কম সময়ে ২০২০ সালে দেশের অর্থমন্ত্রী হন তিনি। করোনাকালে অর্থনৈতিক চাপ সামলানোর জন্য প্রশংসা পেয়েছেন ঋষি সুনাক। ক্ষমতায় গেলে অর্থনীতির গতি ফেরাতে ও জনগণের করের বোঝা কমাতে চান তিনি।
